Sonde / Roding
Quality Level B
What is a sonde? A sonde is a small usually waterproof device that generates a RF signal in the form of a pulse. This pulse is able to be synchronised with by a receiver and buy pulling or pushing it into a pipe or conduit the asset can be found.
Rodding is placing a conductive wire into a pipe to act as a conductor for a signal.
The Sonde and Rodding techniques are used when pipes or conduits the assets are running in are not able to carry a signal such as;
• PVC pipes
• AC Pipes (Asbestos pipes)
• VC Pipes (Vitrified Clay Pipes)
• Concrete pipes
• Any non-conductive pipe
An example of services that may require sonde and rodding include;
Sewer
Stormwater
Electrical
Irrigation
Optic Fibre
Disused conduits
Bore holes
Bored tunnels
Any plastic or cement pipes.
What if there is no access to the inside of these pipes or cables?
